The Situation

FrozenCPU has grown from a small shop out of the owner’s garage to a full-fledged, leading provider of PC modification supplies. For the last 4½ years new features had been added to their existing Interchange-based website to try and keep up with the site’s growth. The site reached the point where it would be difficult to do all that was needed within the existing framework and it was time for a fresh look. The site built would need to be representative of the professionalism, excellent customer service and high quality products that FrozenCPU has come to be known for. It would also need better text, link, and meta tag management tools to achieve excellent positioning in search engines so that new customers could easily find the site. Finally, it would also need a streamlined back-end for quicker setup of products, options, pricing, and inventory.

End Point's Solution

End Point’s Ron Phipps worked with FrozenCPU to come up with a list of new features and detailed requirements. Ron worked with the latest version of Interchange (version 5.5) and built the new site from the ground up. Wayne Fehres was responsible for coming up with a professional and flexible graphic design that met all of the requirements.
The first problem to tackle was how to best deal with FrozenCPU’s extensive use of product options and cross-selling. End Point built a custom Interchange option module to allow FrozenCPU to set up groups of options that can be applied to the products. These groups are reusable, which results in the ability to easily update one group that will affect multiple products at once. The option module also allows for the pricing and title of the product to be overridden at the option level giving FrozenCPU fine control of how their options are displayed.
The next hurdle faced was how to allow FrozenCPU better control of their text management throughout the site. End Point built a system that allows FrozenCPU to easily place meta tags and keywords on every page of their site. The category system was also rebuilt with landing pages for each level in the category system so there is additional room on the site for descriptive text that directly relates to the products being sold, improving their search engine placement.
The final issue that had to be addressed was the designing of a system that would serve the heavily-trafficked site with speed and reliability. Using the latest server hardware, End Point set up two powerful dual processor, dual core systems on 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux, one as a web/application server and one as a database server, in a major data center with 28 Gbps of connectivity via 8 independent Internet backbone providers. Splitting the roles of the servers improves disk caching and spreads out the load, and allows FrozenCPU to later add more application or database servers as the site grows and demands more processing power.

The Results

FrozenCPU has the most advanced PC modification e-commerce website on the Internet. The system allows FrozenCPU’s staff to easily enter their products, inventory and options, reducing the time spent on those tasks. The site has improved in the search engine rankings due to advanced management of text, keywords and meta tags throughout the site. The site is also served at top speeds, improving upon the customer’s experience and improving conversion from visitors to sales.
